A Prosperity of Worms

By: Fiona Peterson

Here on the mountain

Spring struggles to stake Her claim;

Jonquils and pansies show bright, bold faces, Yet Winter makes a comeback

And brings snow in May.

Newly arrived robins complain and lament in the snowy dusk,

Wondering, perhaps, what drew them North,

Away from easy Southern living and a prosperity of worms.

How long until brilliant Sun and soft, green breezes return

To warm earth & stone,

To vanquish late come, unwelcome snow?

Still, for those who can hear,

Notes of Springsong begin to sound in varied keys

Despite Winter’s reluctance to leave,

And soon will bring a new found prosper
